in the footsteps of the Liberator Bolivar

Presidents Fidel Castro & Hugo Chavez
WELCOME TO LONDON
President Hugo Chavez
on your way to AFRIKA

"...When success is not assured, when the state is weak, and when results are distantly seen, all men hesitate; opinion is divided, passions rage, and the enemy fans these passions in order to win an easy victory because of them. As soon as we are strong and under the guidance of a liberal nation which will lend us her protection, we will achieve accord in cultivating the virtues and talents that lead to glory. Then will we march majestically toward that great prosperity for which South America is destined. Then will those sciences and arts which, born in the East, have enlightened Europe, wing their way to a free Colombia, which will cordially bid them welcome...."

CHAGOS win right to home lands

Court victory for Chagos families

Families exiled from the Chagos Islands in the 1960s and 70s to make way for a US Indian Ocean airbase have won a new victory in their long fight to return.
The UK High Court ruled in their favour in their battle to prove they were illegally removed by the UK government.

the debate heats up

The debate continued yesterday at the The Empire and Commonwealth Museum on whether Bristol City should APOLOGISE for the city predecessors' involvement and benefit from Chattel slavery.
It was concluded at the debate that Bristol should apologise. This follows closely on the heels of the UK Parlimentary Oppostion's Conservatives Leader stating categorically that he would not be apologising for slavery.

caught in fishermen's net

These Leather-back turtles were nesting females, coming to shore to lay eggs at Matura Beach on the east coast of Trinidad. The period of March through September are nesting months for leatherback turtles in T&T. Isn't it about time the Trinidad & Tobago Government declare the region in this sacred season OFF LIMIT For FISHERMEN?

Apparently there is an existing law for the protection of the species under the Wildlife and Fisheries Acts. How this is enforced coupled with the gallant efforts by local nature conservationists is another matter.

We have carelessly discarded the ways of our predecessors and yet exclaim in desperation when calamity visits.

in praise of CAGUAMA

Caguama: Indigenous Mother deity
The Arrau turtle is threatened with extinction, so every year conservationists in Venezuela collect thousands of the hatchlings, raise them in captivity and then release them into the wild to try to guarantee the survival of the species.
Scrambling over each other to reach the Orinoco waters, thousands of palm-sized, green turtles were released over the weekend from a sandy island on the huge river in the latest part of a 10-year program to preserve the species.
The turtle is an endangered creature that holds great significane to indigenous peoples all over the world.
May the ancestors be pleased
